Review

“A delightful, illuminating grab bag of space-flight curiosities.” - Kirkus Reviews“A truly funny look at the less majestic aspects of the space program.... Roach’s writing is supremely accessible, but there’s never a moment when you aren’t aware of how much research she’s done into unexplored reaches of space travel.” - Entertainment Weekly“This is the kind of smart, smirky stuff that Roach does so well.” - Geoff Nicholson, San Francisco Chronicle“Cool answers to questions about the void you didn’t even know you had.” - People“An utterly fascinating account, made all the more entertaining by the author’s ever-amused tone.” - BookPage“An impish and adventurous writer with a gleefully inquisitive mind and stand-up comic’s timing.” - Booklist“The author’s writing comes across as reportorial, but with a clear sense of humor; even the footnotes are used to both informational and comedic effect.” - Time Out New York“With an unflinching eye, [Roach] launches readers into the thick of spaceflight’s grossest engineering challenges.” - M. G. Lord, The New York Times Book Review“Roach’s strange enthusiasm for all things oddball . . . makes Mars a more than worthy destination.” - Time“Roach provides a highly readable, often hilarious, guide.” - Christian Science Monitor

I love Mary Roach--where else can one find a humorous, talented writer with boundless enthusiasm and such deep curiosity about off-beat subjects? Roach tackles space travel and all the little things we don't think about; how to go to the bathroom in zero G, what happens in space when you can't bathe and what 15 G's will do to the average person. Roach gives us a glimpse into the training that NASA astronauts must undergo, takes us on a ride on the "Vomit Comet" and also discusses all the of the different experiments that astronauts and the devices they operate must endure. We also find out about fist fights in space (on MIR), why the Japanese astronauts in training have to create 1000 origamis (which are then analyzied by psychologists for signs of stress, etc.)and how a Gemini astronaut smuggled a corned beef sandwich on one mission among other "tasty" tidbits. As usual, Roach jumps in and floats through all the material with her characteristic wry insight into human nature. Is space some place humans should be? Probably not but as Roach herself would probably point out--that's precisely why we're going there."Packing for Mars" is as entertaining as Roach's previous books "Stiff", "Spook" and "Bonk" which looked at what happens to us when we die, if there's an after life (and if there is what all the fuss is about) and...sex and our ambivalent relationship with each one of these sujects. A great and breezy read you should pack this one with all of your other reading this year.

I read this book after reading "The Martin", now a blockbuster movie, and am glad I read the Science behind the Fiction other authors use to make Mars sound awesome and dangerous. This author has a practical, tongue-in-cheek but factual and very funny style of writing that I really enjoyed. She did a lot of painstaking research for her book, extensive travel, and probably had to listen to thousands of hours of NASA transcripts and interview notes to get a few gut-bustingly funny precious gems. Totally worth it. I recommend this book to all my science-geek, and non-science friends who are interested in what it really might be like to get to Mars alive. Is being an astronaut really work all the trouble? Either way, a very funny and interesting read.

Roach strips away the glamor and heroics to offer us a look at the grittier, and messier, aspects of space travel as it relates to the human body. It's all here: food, sex, personal hygiene, motion sickness, claustrophobia, physiological changes, defecation. While we may snicker at some, these are aspects of the human condition which are glossed over as we defiantly insist that we will conquer other worlds. Fortunately, scientists the world over are not ignoring these aspects. It's just that they don't make for good PR. Roach presents them here. But the best part is Roach herself. Her wit and unabashed curiosity are in plain sight, boldly going where decorum and press releases dare not go. There's just enough science here to give the layman an idea of what's going on--and presenting it in clear terms--without overwhelming him with forensic detail. She interviews astronauts and scientists, historians and charlatans, and when research isn't enough, she bravely participates in experiments (flying aboard a C-9, drinking recycled urine). Despite being confronted with the unpleasant facts of space travel, Roach doesn't flinch. She satisfies our curiosity while satisfying her own.

I love reading Mary Roach. Whether its dead bodies, ghost research, liquid diets for astronauts, or what food makes the best crunch, Roach expertly tells the story and explains science in an amusing and easy to understand way.Space travel has always fascinated me and the idea of moving to Mars permanently, so I was especially excited about this book.I love this book - but if she decided to write about mouse droppings, car parts, or the history of nails, I would grab those books too.

Because I am a twelve year old boy when it comes to all things NASA I tend to read anything that has to do with space travel. This book about the practical logistics of space travel to the Red Planet came up, and hearing about Mary and her book on cadavers I bought it. What followed was tenacious and through investigation of what will be needed to leave earth for years at. However what also followed was an amazingly funny, gross, "can't believe she went there" tale that is worth reading just for the notes asides. Thank you Mary. I will be reading and or listing to all your books... While doing it every one is going to think I am a little off in the coffee shop I sit in as I laugh so hard I snot.

The book is both interesting and disgusting. Roach has a penchant for the gross and macabre aspects of life. This is an author who wrote entire books on digestion and corpses. You won’t hear much about rocket propulsion or space navigation, but the zero-G toilet is covered in excruciating detail. Many pages are devoted to topics such as feces and vomiting.Roach certainly did her homework - she snags a ride on the “vomit comet” to experience zero-G first hand, and travels to remote outposts to see how astronauts might live on Mars. The book is carefully researched, and she frequently peppers the text with amusing footnotes and details she discovered along the way. It’s a good read if you’re not squeamish.A note about the audio edition: Roach is a talented public speaker, so it's really unfortunate she doesn’t read her own book. The “narrator’s” harsh, school-marm voice unfortunately drains much of the humor and wit from Roach’s text. I also wish the audio book came packaged on an MP3 disk. I had to manually rip and copy onto one myself, because "stop to change the disk" doesn't work while you're driving.

State Phobia and Civil Society: The Political Legacy of Michel FoucaultBy Mitchell Dean, Kaspar Villadsen, Dean Mitchell

State Phobia and Civil Society draws extensively upon the work of Michel Foucault to argue for the necessity of the concept of the state in political and social analysis. In so doing, it takes on not only the dominant view in the human sciences that the concept of the state is outmoded, but also the large interpretative literature on Foucault, which claims that he displaces the state for a de-centered analytics of power. Understanding Foucault means understanding all his interlocutors—whether Marxists, Maoists, neoliberals, or social democrats. It requires turning to Foucault's colleagues, including Deleuze and Guattari, François Ewald, and Blandine Kreigel, in relation to whom he carved out a position. And it entails an examination of his legacy in Hardt and Negri, the theorists of Empire, or in Nikolas Rose, the influential English sociologist. Foucault's own view is highly ambiguous: he claims to be concerned with the exercise of political sovereignty, yet his work cannot make visible the concept of the state. Moving beyond Foucault, the authors outline new ways of conceiving the state's role in establishing social order and in mediating between an inequality-producing capitalist economy and the juridical equality and political rights of individuals. Arguing that states and their cooperation remain of vital importance to resolving contemporary crises, they demonstrate the interdependence of state and civil society and the necessity of social forms of governance.

Review
"This important book will stand as a milestone in Foucault studies and social and political theory more generally."—Sanford Schram, Hunter College

"This strong and timely work is a valuable corrective to many of the excesses of Foucault scholarship that have emerged and taken root in recent decades."—Jeffrey Bussolini, City University of New York

"Dean and Villadsen cleverly interrogate the ambiguities of Michel Foucault's writing on the devolved power of the state to the local sites of surveillance and control. Arguing against these academic fashions, they restore the centrality of the state to social and political theory. State Phobia is a timely investigation of the state in a period of austerity packages, welfare cuts, pension restrictions and admonitions to citizens for self-maintenance."—Bryan S. Turner, The Graduate Center, CUNY

"State Phobia addresses what I consider the most urgent issue of the contemporary Left: how to deal with state power? Traditional Social Democracy comfortably played the parliamentary game, Stalinist Communists imposed ruthless dictatorship, while the New Left demonized the State and imagined direct non-representative democracy. The recent experience of Syriza in Greece has made it clear how difficult it is for the "radical" anti-statist Left to exercise state power in a way that is different from Social Democracy or Stalinism. Dean and Villadsen convincingly demonstrate that the anti-statist attitude must be abandoned: instead of dreaming of 'overcoming' the state, we must learn to use it in a new way. I can only describe State Phobia in terms usually reserved for bestsellers: un-put-downable, a cause of sleepless nights."—Slavoj Žižek, University of Ljubljana

Really enjoyed this book, I think it's my favorite Lauren K Denton read so far! She has great character development with the right combo of love, loss, growth and change. The story follows three generations of women–a mom, her teenage daughter, and her mother. She tells the story from each women's point of view, which I love. Her descriptions had me picturing the exact location of Jessie's shop, Sumner's home on the water and the entirety of Glory Road. I connected easily to the story and loved every page. This would be the PERFECT spring break or summer read, you won't be disappointed....except maybe when you've finished and have to move on to read something else!! ;)

Thank you to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the advanced copy of Glory Road by Lauren K. Denton.I have read both The Hideaway and Hurricane Season by Lauren K. Denton and she's quickly become one of my favorite authors when it comes to women's southern fiction. I absolutely adored both previous books and had a hunch Glory Road would become a favorite of mine as well. This book felt a little different from The Hideaway and Hurricane Season, but in very good ways.Glory Road follows Jessie, Evan (Jessie's fourteen year old daughter), and Gus (Jessie's mother). Jessie and Evan had moved back to her hometown of Perry, Alabama, several years ago after her marriage crumbled.Jessie opened her gardening shop, Twig, and finally feels like herself after years of struggling to be someone she was not. She's closed off her heart to love after her divorce, but this summer might prove to be one that will open her heart back up. A close high school friend, Ben, reenters her life and then she meets Sumner when he casually walks into her gardening shop one day.Evan is entering into the summer before her freshman year in high school begins and helps in her Mom's shop frequently. She is determined to hold onto her unique personality and not to be changed by the world around her. This summer opens up a world of possibility for Evan, and she's determined to make the most of it.Gus is a stubborn, witty homemaker, always cooking up something in the kitchen. She's a widow, living next door to her daughter and granddaughter. She is not afraid to share her opinion and is always trying to steer Jessie towards love again. This book is sweet, full of summertime nostalgia and glimpses of the south. I enjoyed the way the book was narrated - it was so well-written and magical. I loved seeing both the similarities and differences in three generations of women throughout the story. The characters were so raw and intentional - Jessie's struggle as she worked through her emotions from her past and the love that she could experience now, Evan's discovery of who she is and how she always turns back to family. I really connected with her and saw pieces of my fourteen-year-old self in her. And then there's Gus. Oh, Gus. She had to be my favorite character. Her stubbornness and humor had me laughing out loud! She is determined and reminded me so much of my own grandmother.Glory Road was such a beautiful story. The descriptions were spot on and had me visualizing everything from that red dirt road, to the rain drops falling during Jessie's evening runs. The small details were incredible as well - before each chapter began, there were quotes from gardening books. This was such a lovely addition and some quotes were so fascinating! I learned a lot about gardening from this book and it made me want to start planting one.Sumner's and Ben's interactions with Jessie were believable and well-written - the struggle in Jessie's emotions and how her backstory is revealed throughout the story and not simply spelled out in the beginning was such a great writing choice. The way Lauren draws out her characters in such a personal way makes all of them seem so real. Gus had me laughing, Evan had me reminiscing, and Jessie had me feeling: peace, sadness, heartbreak, fear, love. This is such a heartfelt read and definitely worth it to pick up!!

Lauren’s books are the kind you want to finish in one sitting. Her first book, The Hideaway, was my favorite book last year and I quickly picked up her second book, The Hurricane, and devoured that one too. This book was the perfect mix of family and romance. Her stories and characters stick with you long after you finish the book. She’s quickly become one of my very favorite authors and I can’t wait to read her future books!

I gave Glory Road 5 stars because it's a beautiful story about family, love, new beginnings and sad endings sometimes. That's the way life goes. I love the setting, the characters and the plot. I highly recommend Lauren K. Denton as a fine writer any girl or woman would enjoy reading.

I always enjoy books by southern authors since I grew up in the South. Lauren Fenton wrote of three women in a family. I loved that each of the women had a voice which made for a richer story line. It was a wonderfully written book. Loved it!

Laughed and cried,, learned things about plants and flowers and also about myself. No one has reached my soul like Laura since Fannie Flagg.

Couldnt wait until her next book came out!! I read Glory Road in about 8 hours, loved it! Now Ill anxiously await the next one.

Mom really enjoyed this book. This was the first Lauren Denton book mom has read. I get all these romance and christian novels for her. She loves to read and this book was no exception. I know when she loves a book because she will read it in a day or two. This book was read in a day and half. In addition, I am on the hunt for more Lauren Denton novels.I never tell about the book itself as I DO NOT want to spoil anything for another reader. Mom may give me a synopsis about the book but I never talk about the story line. Hate it when someone tells me something about the story that occurs 3/4 the way thru a book or a reviewer tells me they do finally get married. I don’t want you spoiling my reading and I do not want to spoil your reading when it comes to a good book. I figure it you are wanting to know a little about the story, you can read the synopsis that Amazon and the author gives you.I figure you need to know if someone enjoyed reading the book or if it was poorly done. This one was an enjoyable read. She will telling the other ladies in the Beauty Shop Book Group about Lauren Denton.
