I give this American sociological ethnography, researched in the Chicago housing projects, my highest recommendation for other readers. Written by an Indian sociologist, born in India, raised as an immigrant in California, and transplanted to Chicago, the book is riveting and nearly impossible to put down at each reading.Aside from learning all about life in the Projects and enjoying the story of getting to know the people in this book, I learned several important things which I never realized before. This book showed me what life was like in every primitive society before the rule of law. One can either have a society where the Rule of Law is enforced, or one where the Law of Power is enforced.Where we have the Rule of Law, everyone is subject to the rule, and laws and contracts are enforced. This protects the general public against HUMAN PREDATORS as THIEVES, as well as those engaged in "OUTLAW CAPITALISM."What we have here in the Projects is a TRIBAL SOCOETY, where the leader (warlord) manages with a combination of POWER and CHARISMA. He takes a cut (like a 'federal' tax) off of EVERY activity that goes on in the complex, from selling candy, washing cars, prostitution, sub-lets, and of course, drug sales. There are smaller community leaders (smaller warlords, male and female) who also take cuts off a number of smaller activities (like 'local' taxes).Reading this book helped me better understand the piracy in Somalia and why we are unlikely to see it eliminated in our lifetimes. Once a society has collapsed, it goes back to this warlord model. It takes a long time for a society to build out of that; such a society cannot easily be put back together. In fact, this model probably applies to more human societies, even today, than does the democratic model. This book helped me to better understand government corruption in the developing world. A democratic model is trying to be imposed upon peoples who behave in a tribal and/or predatory manner with each other. This is a model that the middle and upper classes in America are far enough removed from that they don't understand it. The whole model makes it difficult for people to get out of this life paradigm.I especially learned that the MOST important business of government--more important than defense, or infrastructure--is REGULATION. Here we have everyone needing to be a "hustler" in order to survive. We have capitalism at it's most extreme and unregulated form. This book really showed me why it is important that capitalism continue to be regulated. This book also had a lot to say about everyday micromanagement of the drug trade on the street level. It covered a different facet than many other books on the drug trade, which concentrate on the lives of the top bosses. I learned that selling drugs on a street corner is actually the drug industry's minimum-wage job, also undertaken for the maximum risk.Anyone interested in these subjects should definitely read this book.

Sudhir Venkatesh was a Ph.D. student at the University of Chicago, studying urban poverty. In an effort to interview those living in urban destitution, he grabbed a multiple-choice survey, and headed over to the Robert Taylor Homes - one of Chicago's most notorious housing projects. After a tense introduction, Venkatesh befriended JT, a leader of Chicago's Black Kings gang. This book is Venkatesh's account of the decade he spent observing gang life in the projects. He followed JT around Robert Taylor Homes, witnessing crack-making and selling, prostitution, and an overabundance of violence -- both gang related, and not. He witnessed life in public housing for those who partnered with the gang, and for those who tried to avoid the gang at all costs. The subject matter of this book is one that has always intrigued me - in high school, I read a book called There Are No Children Here (also set in Chicago), which highlighted the lives of children growing up in a blighted and failing housing system. I chose the college I did because I had originally planned to major in Urban Studies and Sociology (I majored in English). Though I didn't study urban plight as I had originally planned, my interest in the subject hasn't waned, and I anticipated loving this book. I didn't. But, I did enjoy it, it was a quick read, and I learned much about the decay of our urban settings. The main issue that I had with this book, is that Venkatesh struck me as painfully naive. He walked into a housing project with a multiple choice survey that asked questions like, "How does it feel to be black and poor?" and actually expected people to respond. What were they supposed to say? "Oh, I love being black and poor. It doesn't bother me at all that I'm a marginalized person, living in a dilapidated building."? Come now.I don't feel like one needs a Mensa caliber brain to realize that these questions are silly and insulting. And yet, Venkatesh was Ph.D. level student at a renowned institution. It just reminded me never to take my common sense for granted. This event took place in the first chapter -- and I didn't really feel that his naivety improved. Venkatesh spent the better part of a decade observing these people, interviewing them, getting to know them, and earning their trust, but, I never felt that he truly understood them. And in fairness, maybe that understanding was never a true possibility. At one point, he broke away from JT for a few days, and interviewed some of the others living in the building. He asked them questions about their "jobs," and their abilities to make a living in this setting. They answered his questions honestly, telling him of the various underground money-making projects that they participated in. Venkatesh knew that JT and his gang "taxed" all the residents who used the building as a place to make money -- and JT was apparently unaware of many of these schemes. Yet, Venkatesh still told JT about these different projects, and then was genuinely surprised when the tenants were angry at him for running his mouth. I wanted to scream at him, "You're a damn fool Sudhir, come on!"During his tenure with the gang, Venkatesh learned so much about how the gang worked and operated, and saw that the gang functioned with the gusto of a Fortune 500 company. JT was the leader of his faction; he had an accountant and a planner. He had worker-bee foot soldiers who stood on the street and sold the product (crack), and he had a whole variety of customers. But, above JT, there was an entire upper-level hierarchy to strive for. The Black Kings were a nationwide gang, and they held leadership meetings all over the country. Venkatesh was fascinated by this -- and so was I.It's not a surprise that the Black Kings cropped up in these buildings. The Robert Taylor Homes were deplorably set-up -- they stretched from 39th Street to 54th, running alongside the Dan Ryan Expressway. In other words, in order for the tenants to LEAVE their housing, they had to literally cross the highway. Many of them did not have cars. They were effectively isolated from the rest of society. The buildings themselves were high rises of 16 stories each - with outdoor hallways. Outdoor. Like a motel. In Chicago. If you haven't been to Chicago -- I'll paint this picture for you: in the winter, Lake Michigan, a huge lake, freezes over. Solid. I've had the wind in Chicago rip at my face so severely that my eyes streamed like I was sobbing, with those tears then literally freezing to my face the second they left my eyes and hit the air. It's cold. It's so. frigging. cold. And, their hallways were outside. After children began plummeting to their deaths from the upper floors, the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) begrudgingly put chain-link fences up along the corridors. So, these people lived in buildings, with outdoor hallways, enclosed by the beauty of chain-link metal.Outdoor hallways aside - the CHA built these buildings, crammed the people inside, and then left, never to come back or administer the required up-keep. Doors fell off the hinges. Water stopped running in many apartments. The elevators sometimes just, went into a free-fall, killing everyone inside -- and this was only if they were working at all. Appeals to the CHA for help went unanswered. It's not surprising that impoverished people, in run-down buildings, with little access to the city, began organizing themselves into street-gangs.But, with all of this said, can gang members be absolved of their multiple misdeeds? I don't personally believe so, and Venkatesh struggled with this also. I don't think he wanted to absolve them; it was clear that he understood that gang-life wasn't a sustainable lifestyle. Gang members weren't long for this world, and unfortunately, neither were the innocents that they came in contact with. The members of this particular gang often said, "You need to understand that the Black Kings are not a gang; we are a community organization, responding to people's needs," and Venkatesh admitted his skepticism about this many times. The gang felt that it provided its tenants "safety," and "employment." They also conducted "community outreach," by going door-to-door and encouraging people to register to vote (once they were signed up, the gang told them who they were to vote for. The Chicago political machine is alive and well, even in the 'hood). The gang may have provided "protection" to the tenants of their building, but they were also targets of drive-by shootings --in which innocents were killed. The gang may have employed people, paying them money to sell drugs -- but in this they were perpetuating addiction. For each "service" that they provided, they inflicted a world of pain. The cycle was never-ending, and vicious. My favorite part of this book though, was the illumination of city-wide, governmental corruption. The CHA wouldn't conduct repairs when most tenants called, but they accepted bribes from some of the "building leaders" in exchange for vaguely explained services. There were police officers that would come into the buildings and beat drug dealers, then raid their apartments, stealing their drugs and their money, but without issuing an arrest. They didn't actually have interest in getting them off of the streets (otherwise, how could they get their cut of a rather lucrative drug trade)? The Aldermen were terrible too. They could be bought by the gang leaders -- they would keep well-meaning police officers away from parks where the dealers would be selling their drugs. It was frustrating.Eventually, the Robert Taylor homes were torn down, and all tenants were "relocated." Many moved to different poor neighborhoods, continuing their life in the projects. Some of JT's gang members joined other gangs to ensure their own safety. The CHA was responsible for relocating the tenants, but it shirked this duty along with all of its others, and the tenants did what they could on their own to find places to live. This book was frustrating, eye-opening, and disheartening. Yet, I recommend it. For more of my reviews, go to readingandmusing.com

This book is an interesting study and read. I was put off towards the end when the author is able to so easily wash his hands of all his study subjects. I realize this is what sociologists do, but I thought after crossing so many other lines with his research, Sudhir would have been motivated to do something he actually believed would help these people. Instead, he concludes things by writing a dissertation and moving on to better things, saying he was probably never really friends with J.T. And that writing this book probably wouldn't help any of the people he had studied. He also mentioned many times feeling guilty for letting J.T. Think he was writing his biography. I just kept thinking, why DIDN’T he just write his biography? There wasn't much in this book that couldn't have been worked into a biography, using the stories of other Robert Taylor tenants to set the scene. The same points could be made, perhaps in an even more convincing way by giving the reader a deeper emotional attachment to J.T..

In short, this book is about a student who decided to study poverty in Chicago by actually living in the "ghetto." As a person who has lived in Chicago my whole life, this book was intriguing from the start. I still remember when the Robert Taylor homes were torn down and some of the tenants were dispersed near my hometown of Skokie, so to learn about their previous life was fascinating and humbling. I drive for Uber in Chicago and when I talk with people, particularly University of Chicago (where the author did his research) students, I usually recommend this book.

For those who cannot get a full week off to take the SANS threat hunting course or maybe not afford it this is your next best thing. The book walks you through the threat intelligence lifecycle with examples a long the way to help you relate back to a known story. This book not only inspires you to learn more about how threats operate it provides you with the tools to understand how you can utilise the data effectively.I see this book as the red team field manual for threat intelligence, it will be something I refer to daily.#buyitnow!

Scott and Rebekah did an excellent job covering everything you need to know to start an intelligence program or mature one that you already have. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. I thought they did a great job explaining how to apply F3EAD in a threat intelligence environment. Even though F3EAD was a large part of the book, the authors also provided some great information on how to best engage with C-suite executives and other stakeholders. I would definitely recommend picking up this book, even if you're already a threat intelligence expert.Content aside, I think the editors (Courtney Allen and Virginia Wilson) really did Scott and Rebekah a disservice. Based on the content alone, I still think Intelligence-Driven Incident Response is worth the full 5 stars; however, throughout the book, there were numerous typos, such as 'adentdversary' on page 180, and other errors (verbiage/grammar). Since the book does have a rather high cover price and is relatively short (only ~240 pages, appendix excluded), I don't think it's unfair to ask for better editing from the O'Reilly staff.

Mandatory reading for anyone involved in IR, CTI, or SOC Land. I wish I had this book book 10 years ago. Stop reading this review and click Add to Cart.

"Intelligence-Driven Incident Response" equips Incident Response professionals with the knowledge and context to integrate traditional Intelligence principles into their cyber defense strategies. My pre-ordered copy arrived today, and I am already impressed with the authors' experience and expertise spanning both of these complex domains. As someone with a background in both information security and "traditional intelligence," I am excited and thankful to see Scott and Rebekah skillfully deconstruct the core components of Incident Response (IR) and intel. They introduce and explain the incident response process, the intelligence process, and cyber threat intelligence, enriched throughout with real-world case studies that tie the concepts together effectively. The content organization is excellent: "Part I. The Fundamentals. Part II. Practical Application. Part III. The Way Forward."There are too many "hit-the-nail-on-the-head" aspects of this book to highlight here, so I'll just mention a few concepts the authors cover that address current gaps in the collective understanding of many organizations.1. The authors discuss the Intelligence cycle and outline ways in which Intelligence-driven incident response feeds the Intelligence cycle. This is a critical point of departure from the mindset of intelligence being just a series of "threat feeds" containing known-bad file hashes and IP addresses. They present a more coherent and reality-aligned way of thinking about this concept than the tool-focused paradigms our executives are exposed to through interactions with vendors.2. "Mining Previous Incidents." This section on page 125 highlights something I've referred to as "internal intelligence" in discussions with industry colleagues. In my experience with tactical intelligence collection in kinetic environments, the concept of "knowing the terrain" is so ingrained in the mindset of Warfighters that it doesn't warrant much discussion. Within information security / cyber defense circles, though, this foundational concept doesn't seem to have the same traction. (Yet.)3. "Intelligence Consumer Goals." The authors articulate the need to think about various consumers of intelligence products through the lens of each consumer's goals. For example, an Executive representing the business has a different scope and set of goals than the malware analyst working with the threat hunting team. The section in chapter 9: "Disseminate" that frames information sharing in the context of which types of stakeholders will consume the intelligence is a must-read for practitioners as well as leadership. In my experience working in both Intel and corporate environments, there tends to be a traditional view of "management reporting" in the corporate setting that can taint the intent of Intelligence Dissemination. Instead of considering the value of producing intelligence reports for "Internal Technical Consumers" as the authors discuss on page 167, the allocation of scarce resources to "reporting" falls into the traditional upward, leadership-focused information sharing. We urgently need the approach outlined in this book to gain traction in our industry. We need a "common operating picture" or a shared understanding of the current situation among the incident response team members, and that warrants allocating resources to disseminating intelligence products horizontally among technical consumers in addition to what has traditionally been viewed as management reporting.4. "The RFI Process." From page 193: "A request for intelligence (RFI) is a specialized product meant to answer a specific question, often in response to a situational awareness need." Bottom line up front: Please read this, and then consider implementing it when you can. (But probably soon, because although it's not a new concept, it is a proven, useful one that we would do well to adopt in information security.)5. "Building an Intelligence Program." This is the title of chapter eleven. By the time the reader has progressed through the previous chapters, she will have developed a solid understanding of the core principles and components of the disciplines of Incident Response and Intelligence, how they converge in the concept of Intelligence-Driven Incident Response, and why it is important to undergird our approach to cyber defense with these time-tested methodologies. The authors lay out a series of considerations, clearly cognizant and respectful of budgetary and resource constraints faced by every reader. The questions posed are realistic and informative.6. Appendix A: "Intelligence Products." Developing an understanding of what this entails and how it can enable & transform cyber defense is, in my opinion, worth the price of the book on its own.The foreword by Rob Lee, Founder of Harbinger Security and DFIR Lead at SANS Institute, is a fascinating glimpse into the historical context around cyber intrusions. This historical perspective is provided by a current industry leader who remains on the front lines of this fight while developing a new generation of Digital Forensics and Incident Response (DFIR) professionals, myself included. Rob's observation from the foreword says a lot: "I wish I had this book 20 years ago in my first intrusion cases while investigating Russian hackers during Moonlight Maze. Luckily, we have this book today, and I can now point to it as required reading for my students who want to move beyond tactical response and apply a framework and strategy to it all that works."I’d recommend diving into a copy of this book as soon as you can. "Intelligence-Driven Incident Response" has the potential to transform security teams and organizations by educating, influencing, and guiding them. And, considering the current state of the cyber threat environment, it couldn’t have come at a better time.

A must read for Everyone in network security and Threat Intelligence and Incident Response is a good candidate for the 2018 Cybersecurity book of the year! The factual no nonsense & no marketing fluff to Incident Response and TI sets the ultimate standard

Very helpful if you are new to incident response.

I bought this for my husband that is filling a role related to defensive cyber operations for a huge organization. He hasn't put this book down since I bought it for him. He stated "I feel like I have had these huge knowledge gaps that this book is filling in for me."

The Underdogs: with Related Texts (Hackett Classics)By Mariano Azuela

In addition to a fresh translation of Los de Abajo, Azuela's classic novel of the Mexican Revolution, this volume offers both a general Introduction to the work and an extensive appendix setting the novel in its historical, literary, and political context. Related texts include contemporary reviews of Azuela's book, an excerpt from Anita Brenner's Idols Behind Altars (1929), and selections from John Reed's Insurgent Mexico (1914).

Review

Pellon's translation marks a clear improvement over the previous English versions of this seminal novel. Pellon captures the crisp, tense, and terse dialogue of Azuela's original, and I believe that his decision to leave some words in Spanish is a good one, given that most of the words involved are already well known to the non-Spanish speaking public. The retention of these Spanish words adds flavor to the translation without turning it into a 'Taco Bell' version of the novel. I am so enthusiastic about Pellon's translation that I believe it should become the standard edition of Los de Abajo read in America. . . In short, this new translation is worthy of the classic on which it is based. I will certainly use it in my courses, but more to the point, I will recommend it to my colleagues teaching courses on English literature, Comparative literature, and American studies. --Roberto González Echevarria, Sterling Professor of Hispanic and Comparative Literatures, Yale University

Gustavo Pellon has produced a flowing, readable new translation of Mariano Azuela's Los de Abajo that avoids the sometimes stilted English of the still popular 1929 translation by Enrique Mungia. Not only is Professor Pellon's English more readable but the translation is made smoother by his decision to leave certain difficult-to-translate words in the original Mexican Spanish. For those who cannot grasp the meaning of these words from the context, a glossary is provided at the end of the book. In addition to the new translation Professor Pellon has provided an important service to those who will use this novel in college classes by including an appendix that outlines the most important events of the Mexican revolution, discusses the novel in historical context, and explains Azuela's particular literary contributions. Finally Pellon attempts to come to grips with Azuela's views of the revolution. Also extremely welcome are the selections from John Reed's and Anita Brenner's writings on Mexico from approximately the same period. In short, this volume provides an integrated analysis of a novel that, while always said to be revelatory of the nature of the revolution, is generally not adequately contextualized. . . . To his credit, in his appendix Professor Pellon addresses the question of whether the novel is revolutionary or counter-revolutionary. --Ann Zulawski, Metamorphoses

This edition of Los de Abajo is a most welcome addition to the available literature for undergraduate teaching of the history of Mexico as well as Mexican and Latin American literature. As a teaching tool, it strikes me as clearly superior to the other editions. Pellon's Introduction and appendices are quite accessible and touch on the major historical and literary aspects of the novel. Pellon sincerely wants to help students understand and appreciate the novel. --Timothy J. Henderson, Auburn University Montgomery

I was brought up on Tintinalli's in residency as our core book and never used Rosen's much, so its finally nice to have a for a comparison. I received both volumes, quickly without damage, and a free redemption for the ebook version on Inkling which has been very nice so far and offers a little nicer amount of graphics, interface. I have been using the ebook more then paper, great reference. The chapters a full of useful reference information, but not unbearably long, and fairly up to date care. It is comparable to Tintinallis, in scope, so it really comes down to preference

Very good book, kindle version included for free! The best in this field of medicine.Very heavy, but compensates due to quality of paper.

Rosen's Emergency Medicine 9th Ed is the best written one yet. Excellent material review and very important detail to dispositions. gsekblad

This the first edition I owned of this book and I'm blown away. The clarity of the information and tables make the dense knowledge contained in this book less intimidating and easier to digest. There's a discussion of certain approaches of managing conditions with final recommendations which I'm not used to in some other books e.g: Harrison.I would complain about the weight of the book except for the quality of the paper used. It's the best 2-volume book I owned in this department. And comes with free full text and videos online or iOS or Andriod.I definitely recommed this book to any one who's serious about emergency medicine.

Only received one volume

Detailed and I appreciate the level and amount of information. I’ve read other emergency medicine texts such as Hardwood and Nuss but it didn’t have as much detail as I wanted. Very happy with Rosen’s.

Only recieved 1 book of the 2 volume set

Love Rosen's. Books came quickly and in great shape. As advertised.

From the Back Cover

Bear Grylls has always sought the ultimate in adventure. Growing up on a remote island off of Britain's windswept coast, he was taught by his father to sail and climb at an early age. Inevitably, it wasn't long before the young explorer was sneaking out to lead all-night climbing expeditions. As a teenager at Eton College, Bear found his identity and purpose through both mountaineering and martial arts. These passions led him into the foothills of the mighty Himalayas and to a karate grandmaster's remote training camp in Japan, an experience that soon helped him earn a second-degree black belt. Returning home, he embarked upon the notoriously grueling selection course for the British Special Forces to join the elite Special Air Service unit 21 SAS—a journey that would push him to the very limits of physical and mental endurance. Then, disaster. Bear broke his back in three places in a horrific free-fall parachuting accident in Africa. It was touch and go whether he would walk again, according to doctors. However, only eighteen months later, a twenty-three-year-old Bear became one of the youngest climbers to scale Mount Everest, the world's highest summit. But this was just the beginning of his many extraordinary adventures. . . .Known and admired by millions as the star of Man vs. Wild, Bear Grylls has survived where few would dare to go. Now, for the first time, Bear tells the story of his action-packed life. Gripping, moving, and wildly exhilarating, Mud, Sweat, and Tears is a must-read for adrenaline junkies and armchair explorers alike.

Bear Grylls is a household name due to his work on TV, primarily the show Man vs. Wild. However, his story is not that of just a TV presenter - it’s a curious combination of privilege and hardship, from his education at the world famous Eton College to his rather humble beginnings as a penniless karate instructor. He has suffered mightily in his years, but has also triumphed, and this is his story - one of determination, enthusiasm, and faith.Mud, Sweat, and Tears isn’t necessarily the most well-written autobiography in existence, but it is easy to read, chopped into a hundred different stories covering his family, his upbringing, his grueling entrance into the UK’s Special Air Service and subsequent medical retirement following a skydiving injury that nearly left him paralyzed for life. Then on, to Mount Everest, his wife, and finally his burgeoning TV career. What Grylls lacks in eloquence he makes up for in spades with genuinely interesting, funny, charming, heartbreaking, and unrelenting stories. He once appeared in a “Most Interesting Man in the World” Dos Equis commercial as a special adviser, but honestly he is probably the closest you can get to the Most Interesting Man in the World in real life.Astonishingly, though, the one aspect of his life that shines through more than any other is just how humble and determined he is. He has had his share of lucky breaks, but also extreme adversity. While he certainly has enjoyed privileges, he’s also put in the work - and been justly rewarded. The book is well worth a read if for no other reason than to be inspired by the vision of hard work and relentless optimism.

I don't usually write a review, but felt compelled being such a big fan of Bear's (you find out in the book that his real name is Edward!). Anyway, this is a very motivational life story about grit, determination, and a man who lives life on the edge. The part explaining how he climbed Mount Everest after coming back from breaking his back in the SAS (British's Special Forces) is especially fascinating. Don't buy into all of the haters out there who claim that Bear is a fake - while many of his "survival" techniques on his MvW show are for entertainment value & shock factor alone, Bear is the real deal and his story proves firsthand just how tough he is, mentally and physically. Keep inspiring people and challenging them to become stronger versions of themselves!

I'm a big fan of watching 'Man v Wild', or other shows with Bear Grylls on TV. The shows themselves are very entertaining, but I didn't know much about the guy who stars in them. When this book came up as an Amazon Daily Deal I thought it was a good opportunity to find out. When I added this to my Goodreads list I was shocked to see that it had rating of over 4 after over 3,000 reviewers. That seems to be exceptional for an autobiography. For me, this book did live up to the high Goodreads rating. It's surprisingly well written and reminded my a lot of Anthony Bourdain in terms of style and sense of humor. Bear Grylls is a very modest guy. He says he is just an average guy with a lot of drive but I would bet not one guy in 10,000 could achieve anything like what he has. While still a student, he qualified for the British Special forces, the SAS. The SAS recruitment STARTS with something like hell week. Their logic is that if you survive that, the special soldering and training is the easy part. Thus Bear qualified for the SAS as a civilian, not coming from the military first. He gives a good account of what some of this qualifying entails, and it's tough, really tough. His military career ended when he broke his back in a parachute accident and spent most of a year in hospital and rehab. So what does he do after that, he climbs Everest! He recounting of this climb was fascinating.I can see how Bear Grylls makes a great motivational speaker. He's a man with incredible drive, passion and determination which you only get a slight glimpse of watching him on TV.4.5 stars overall.

Bear Grylls is my hero and I am a huge fan of his tv show man vs. wild. The beginning of the book started off slow and I was not that interested. However, as the book progressed the excitement and suspense built. The more I read, the more I wanted to continue to read. The life lessons I learned from this book and this man's life I have taken to heart. On the surface it is a story of love and adventure. But it is also a story of pain, suffering, fear, and depression. By surviving his nearly fatal skydiving accident, by surviving SAS selection, by surviving school and college, by surviving mount everest, by surviving the death of his dearly beloved father, and all the other pain that he has gone through. He survived it all and found happiness, peace, joy, and liberation somehow, someway. He found his inner strength with the help of his lovely wife and by having faith in god. The book is more than a life story but the story of the need to be loved, the story of finding your inner strength. and the story of survival.

I have been a Bear Grylls fan for quite a while, so I really enjoyed getting to know a little about Bear's past and how he became the man he is today. The book starts from the beginning starting off with Bear's young life as an inquisitive and playful boy; it discusses his relationships with his family and recalls memories - both good and bad - about his early development. It then continues to discuss his military training, all the hardships and failures. The book does a good job into diving you into his adventures in Everest. Overall, the book does a good job at keeping you entertained and expressing all the life lessons Bear has learned throughout the years.

Talbot’s well written and insightful book provides an entertaining and enlightening look at the recent history of the city of San Francisco. From the 1950s and 1960s, when the city began to shape its identity as a haven for iconoclasts and “alternative” types through the turbulence of the 1970s to the both admirable and regrettable developments of the end of the twentieth century, Talbot’s critical eye reports on the good, the bad, and the very ugly.Although the author eschews the temptation to romanticize San Francisco’s multidimensional history, he acknowledges all the best that the city has to offer as he portrays the struggles and hardships that many readers might not be aware of—for example, the racial divide that vexed the city for much of the 1970s and the uneasy political partnerships that existed between venerable liberal figures like Mayor George Moscone, Harvey Milk, and the Peoples Temple, Jim Jones’ suicide cult, which once held an eerie degree of political power in the city.Talbot devotes large sections of the book to the SLA and its abduction of Patty Hearst, San Francisco’s evolution as the gay capital of the US (if not the world), the strange ordeal of the Peoples Temple, Dan White’s assassination of Moscone and Milk, Dianne Feinstein’s political ascension, and other bits of history both profound (the Zebra murders) and uplifting (the 49ers’ triumph as NFL champions).Overall, a compelling examination of the city of San Francisco, and a must-read for anyone who lives there or who has ever been curious about the city’s unique appeal.

For many baby boomers growing up in the Pacific Northwest, San Francisco’s Summer of Love represented forbidden pleasures just out of reach. A few of us ventured south to partake, most stayed put, stymied by our tender years (I was 14 in the summer of 1967, living in a small northwest farming community) or anchored by summer jobs, American Legion baseball and other provincial obligations. A year earlier, a trip to Candlestick Park to catch a Giants game would have topped my San Francisco to do list; now, there was the prospect of encountering bra-less hippie chicks in tight-fitting peasant blouses which could lead to – well, I hadn’t quite figured out that part just yet. Later, during our college years, we would encounter assorted burnouts who claimed to have Been There and Done It.David Talbot has crafted a wonderfully written and meticulously researched book about a 15-year period of San Francisco’s political and cultural history, Season of the Witch. It covers much more than the Summer of Love. Readers will be re-introduced, or be discovering for the first time, the likes of Vincent Hallinan, Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, Moby Grape, Harvey Milk, Patty Hearst, Herb Caen and Cleve Jones.Season of the Witch is filled with overflowing exuberance on one page and grief and rage on the next. Stories about free outdoor concerts given by The Grateful Dead and other local bands yield to stories about drug dealing street punks and self-styled revolutionaries. As the region became a destination for free spirits, adventure seekers and sexual minorities, conflicts between newcomers and established residents were inevitable. Talbot’s portrayal of San Francisco’s law enforcement community was too generalized and harsh in the opinion of some reviewers who lived in the region at the time, but he does not exaggerate the power and influence of Catholic Church doctrine as it reinforced attitudes about God, Family, Country and Civic Order in the hearts and minds of police officers and elected officials. One officer, firmly grounded in Catholic values, was Dan White. While preparing to run for a position on the Board of Supervisors in 1977, “White lashed out at the ‘social malignancies’ and ‘cesspool of perversion’ that were contaminating his hometown. ‘I am not going to be forced out of San Francisco by splinter groups of radicals, social deviants and incorrigibles,’ vowed White.”And, finally, Season of the Witch forces us to remember the monster that was Jim Jones. The story of the People’s Temple, the forced pilgrimage of hundreds of disciples to the humid hellhole of Guyana and the horrific ending is treated objectively by Talbot. One oversight: The widespread, defiant denial with respect to AIDS within the gay community, which alienated many straights and probably delayed the legalization of civil unions and same-sex marriage by at least a decade, was never addressed by the author.Other west coast cities would come to emulate the libertarianism of San Francisco – Seattle, Eugene, Portland, Vancouver, B.C. - and there are many cautionary tales for leaders of those communities to heed within the pages of Season of the Witch.Talbot’s opus is a profoundly valuable addition to our historical understanding of societal pendulum swings. If I could give it six stars, I would

My daughter moved to San Francisco 18 months ago, and while visiting her there I picked this book up in the City Lights book store. Browsing the cover, it seemed like it might offer some insight into my kid's new home base. Boy, did it deliver! Mr. Talbot clearly loves San Francisco. His extremely well-researched book made me love it too, and also feel better about my East Coast baby's move to the West. Also, his writing style is what I'd describe as extremely readable. His use of words and the flow of the words are a joy for the reader. As a baby boomer I particularly enjoyed reading details I didn't know about the so-called Summer of Love, the Patty Hearst case, and the horrific story of Jim Jones and the PeoplesTemple, all enriched by the author's insights. Highly recommend,

This is an excellent book! It does lean left, but the manner in which each story is depicted keeps it interesting. Whether you agree or disagree with the anti-establishment movement of the 60s and early 70s, this book gives great insight to the events of the period. San Francisco is a beautiful city and this book makes the colors even brighter. You can see the darkness just beneath the light and there is an undercurrent of hardship in those shadows. It's like mucking through the underbelly of the city without getting your shoes wet. They say good intentions pave the way to evil; there is plenty here to spare. Growing up in the 70s, I remember many of these stories on the news while others are just now becoming major motion pictures. Jonestown and Harvey Milk just to name a couple. If you are interested in history, perspective, the city, or just want a good political insider story, I highly recommend this book. It is sometimes disturbing, other times inspiring and uplifting, and often everything at once. Enjoy the ride.
