Siza nació en Matosinhos (Portugal) en 1933 y fundó su propio despacho en 1954 en Oporto, ciudad en cuya universidad imparte clases de construcción desde 1976. En 1988 recibió el Premio Mies van der Rohe de la Unión Europea, en 1997 el Praemium Imperiale en Japón, en 2009 la Medalla de Oro del RIBA y en 2012 el León de Oro por su trayectoria profesional en la Bienal de Arquitectura de Venecia.
